Every four years, we participate in a comprehensive hunger study published by Feeding America called Hunger in America - Local Report Prepared for the Food Bank of North Alabama. The study provides authoritative, comprehensive and statistically valid data about the challenges a person seeking food assistance in North Alabama faces.
From 2006 to 2010 the number of persons seeking emergency food assistance across North Alabama increased by 21%. These and other demographic shifts are in keeping with the changes that have occurred throughout our society as a result of the recent economic downturn.
Community Food Security means building a strong, sustainable, local food system that ensures access to affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food to all people at all times. We see community food security initiatives as a way to proactively address the underlying causes of hunger and poverty.
